11. Sunday, August 17-Yellowstone

Bighorn National Forest

I have been told I have a fairly decent vocabulary. BUT..there are no words in that vocabulary to describe the sights we both saw as we left Cody this morning and drove through the Bighorn National Forest to get to Yellowstone.

The terms 'green trees' and 'high peaks' and 'deep ravines' do not do any justice to what we drove through. Absolutely breathtaking.

We entered the park at about 10:00 through the East gate and took one of several roads winding through the different parts of the park. We both were hoping to get a look at wildlife (bison, deer, more) and within 5 minutes, this guy came rambling down the centerline without a care in the world. I took pictures and a video (which won't load on this blog). As we drove through the rest of the park for several hours, we saw lots of buffalo but no deer.

This is my park and I can go where I want to go....

We took many turnoffs to see the calderas and different falls. All were worth seeing. In the middle of August, there were indeed 1,000,000 people in the park but no real traffic or crowds to fight (other than the usual ignoramuses who populate the world as if it was theirs to wander at will.

We got to the Old Faithful Inn at 2:45 and registered. Our room was not ready so we parked the car and wandered over to see the Old Faithful geyser do it's thing at 3:04. Yes, the damn thing is on a timer, at least according to the years of documentation that allows for pretty accurate time guesses.

Spectacular is a good word. Lots of viewers is another good word. Very popular attraction!

See!, we were really there!!

The "Old Faithful Inn" was built over the winter of 1903 and opened for visitors in 1094. Hard to believe such a building could be built over a brutal winter.

Tomorrow, who knows? Maybe leave and head south toward Jackson, maybe pass Jackson and continue on to lower Idaho. More will be revealed.......
