13. Tuesday, August 19-Heading further west...

We spent the night in Hailey, Idaho at an AmericInn. Quiet, clean, good breakfast.

Got a good start early and drove 11 miles further north into Sun Valley, actually the town of Ketchum with Sun Valley as the ski resort. The weather was overcast and the roads were under construction so the drive was not all that great. Sun Valley resort actually does their skiing on Dollar Mountain (rather apt...) and Bald Mt.

The area has several ski mountains and is obviously geared toward the wealthy winter crowd. We saw lots of very pricey homes along the way. Homes, walls, estates, ranches, etc.

Once in Ketchum, we decided there was nothing there for us (and we did not even stop to shop for $400.00 jeans!) so we retraced a bit and headed out to points unknown in Oregon.

Again I say, driving the southern parts of Idaho are monotonous. Along the way, we saw the sky ahead providing some views. See the scrub land below the clouds? Mile after mile after mile after mile after.........................

We did manage to find a very nice rest area to have yet another roadside lunch, again with food 'liberated' from the breakfast bar at the hotel. We may be onto something here :))  I hope Lee has said we also have our own cheese and crackers!!!!!!!

Another great lunch in the open air

A little before lunch, we stopped to buy Toni a vacation home. She did not have one out west before this beauty showed up on our drive in Idaho. A bit of sweeping out and move right in....

Our new vacation location......NOT!

We crossed the Oregon state line and stopped at the visitor's center. The lady there was exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful. Long story short, we ended up stopping early for the day in the town of Baker City.

Baker City, Oregon at one time was the largest city in the state and still has the same population it had in the 1920's. Seattle and other cities have since far surpassed it in size. There is a renovated city downtown (according to the visitor center lady) that just had to be seen.

Maybe, but it seems that on a Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 PM as we wandered the main street, 90% of the shops were closed. There is a hotel dating from the late 1890's (the Geiser Grand) that was not remodeled but restored to it's former glory after being abandoned for 30 years. Really nice interior.

Back to our Best Western hotel (no AmericInns) at 5 (ish) for a few adult beverages and what has been touted as very special ribs in the hotel restaurant. Time and taste will tell.

Tomorrow our initial objective is to go to Walla Walla Washington to check out the wine action and perhaps back into Oregon to mosey along the Columbia River basin. Stay tuned...
