4. August 10.......And awayyyy they go!

Sunday, August 10 and we made it! Up very early, out the door and underway at 07:30.

7 weeks of 'stuff' and ready to go!

The plan was to run for the vicinity of Indianapolis (more than half way to Kay and Mike Passarelli's place in Elmhurst, Il outside Chicago.) We are going to stay with them for one night and then head toward Minnesota and Jan and Darald Hirshey for a two night visit.

Anyhow, day one statistics:
  • Driving time on the road: 9 hours, 49 minutes
  • Miles travelled: 547 (too damn far for one day)
As it was a Sunday, there was little traffic to contend with. As we were not in a particular rush and we are both tired of 'big roads', we opted to take smaller roads through VA, WV, MD, OH and IN. The hills on the smaller roads in VA and WV are not to be repeated again for some time. Very twisty and 'turny' but we saw places we had not seen before.

We eventually got on I-70 heading West and had to go through Columbus, OH. Bad move...No one knew it was Sunday apparently and the ramp off I-70 West onto I-465 North toward Indianapolis was under repair. That whole process of getting off at the next available spot, doing a u-turn and getting going correctly was a bit of a pain.

We ended up the first day at a Hampton Inn in Whitestown, Indiana, not far north of Indianapolis. The place was brand new and the price was very reasonable.

Tomorrow is up and off to see Kay and Mike.
